Blue Rabbit @ The Starry Plough, Berkeley

 —  —

The Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, CA

Jai Josephs Songwriter ShowcaseA free, all-ages event quite early in the day! Blue Rabbit will be debuting four new songs at the Jai Josephs Songwriter Showcase at The Starry Plough (Yelp) in Berkeley, and I'll be filling in on cello again. It'd be a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon even if I weren't there, working my alchemy to re-animate an assemblage of long dead maple, spruce, ebony, horsehair, and pine resin, etc. "The living, when the dead wood of the bow springs back to life, must die." (Heraclitus of Ephesus, ca. 535-475BC, Fragment 66, trans. Brooks Haxton.) The death I invoke is pleasant and wholly metaphorical, of course. ;-)

Blue Rabbit @ Red Devil Lounge, San Francisco

Red Devil Lounge, 1695 Polk St., San Francisco, CA

Red Devil Lounge(21+, $6 Cover) Happy new year! Startin' it off right with Blue Rabbit, rockin' the Red Devil Lounge (Yelp) again. (Does that make purple nurples?!) Anyway, what a kickin' Nob Hill venue this is - I highly recommend you turn out for an evening of devilry in eager anticipation of the Year of the Rabbit!

Doors at 8pm, then we're opening at 9pm, followed by two great bands I'm super-excited to experience live: deliciously lush audiafauna, and headliners, Sioux City Kid - I totally dig their rootsy sound, obviously influenced by Tom Waits.

Hugh Fox @ Temescal Arts Center, Oakland

 —  —

Temescal Arts Center, 511 48th Street, Oakland, CA

Oakland Under $100(All ages, Free) I'll be improvising on cello for the second annual "Oakland Under $100" show at Temescal Arts Center around the corner from Lanesplitter Pizza & Pub (Yelp). About a dozen local artists will show works (drawing, jewelry, painting, photography, sculpture) at exceptionally accessible prices - nothing more than $100, many below $50.

And there will be live music throughout the evening by myself (in the 7-7:45pm slot), followed by Val Esway + El Mirage, then The Ukaladies Strumming Club. For my part, I've been assembling skeletons to be fleshed out as wintry, ambient improvisations inspired by several stories I've read recently about Eskimos and the Arctic. :)

This is all part of the Temescal Winter Art Hop, so there will be plenty of other galleries to see nearby, as well as shops, restaurants, and of course bars to wet your whistle - I can particularly recommend a break for wine and appetizers at Marc 49 wine bar (Yelp).

Blue Rabbit @ Red Devil Lounge, San Francisco

Red Devil Lounge, 1695 Polk St., San Francisco, CA

Red Devil Lounge(21+, $10 Cover) Blue Rabbit's turning up the heat at Red Devil Lounge (Yelp), one of our favorite venues, this time with The Welcome Matt (Matt Langlois) and Nymph - schweet! Show starts at 9, and we're on at 10pm.

Back after a long hiatus while Heather and Danny welcomed into the world their beautiful son, Tavish (ceud mìle fàilte, Thàmhais!), we're tan, rested, and hungry. We've got lotsa new songs, and - don't worry - will throw in some of the old faves, as well.

Speaking of hungry, within a block (of some of the best people watching this world has to offer) are plenty of dinner options, among them: Amélie (Yelp), Parrilla (Yelp), and The Crepe House (Yelp). After soundcheck I'm gonna try to fit in a cocktail at The Bigfoot Lodge (Yelp), and so should you - let's make it a Thursday night to remember! C'mon, you know you wanna! >:-{|>

Darkades @ Carroll Creek Concert, Lone Pine, CA

DeLaCour Ranch, 5000 Horseshoe Meadow Road, Lone Pine, CA

Find Darkades on FacebookCarroll Creek ConcertYou had me at "taco truck!"

(All ages, Free) Darkades is a jam band I've been involved with for a number of years. This time we're jamming to some dark eighties tunes by the likes of The Church, Bauhaus, Pete Shelley, The Human League, etc., all at the Carrol Creek Concert, a music festival in the eastern foothills of the Sierras, within striking distance of Yosemite, Mono Lake, Mt. Whitney, Mammoth Mountain, and Death Valley. Check it out ...if you're in the area, hehe.

Could be the beginning of something big? Or better yet, something moderately sized, friendly, and cool.

A taco truck has been diverted from its normal route to work this festival! Personally, I'm on a mission to find a transcendent piece of cherry pie and a damn fine cup o' coffee.

The map link above won't work, so try this one.

Now you know... and knowing is half the battle.

Hugh Fox & Eah @ Swarm Studios, Oakland

 —  —

Swarm Studios (Near Jack London Square), 560 2nd Street, Oakland, CA

Swarm Studios - Open Studios 2010 Postcard(All ages, Free) Swarm Studios denizens, including my buddies, painters Cleo Vilett (that's her flying fish, right) and Terry Furry, as well as many others, are opening up their workspaces to the public as part of the East Bay Open Studios 2010 event produced by PRO ARTS.

And while you're enjoying the art and your complimentary beverages and snacks, I'll be serenading with longtime collaborator, Eah (of Blue Rabbit) on celtic harp. We'll play an hour's worth of songs she's written over the years, focusing on my favorites: the otherwordly ones with heavy Celtic and Swedish folk influence - yay! This may be as close as I'll ever get to a gig at Yoshi's (just around the corner), so come get it while the gettin's good!

She will lead a discussion of the intersection of music, digital media, and technology to inspire people around nature and culture, then put those ideas into practice with a reception serenaded with music inspired by Nature and performed by Amy and friends on instruments of the forest (including my frequent collaborator, Eah, on celtic harp, and myself on cello).

Blue Rabbit @ Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco

Bottom of the Hill, 1233 17th Street, San Francicso, CA

Bottom of the Hill(All ages, $10) Red Ryder presents Fragile, at Bottom of the Hill (Yelp), featuring The Moonlight Orchestra (CD release party) and Montana 1948, hosted by comedian Harvin Sethi. Blue Rabbit opens, which is where I come in, subbing in on cello for Mrs. Harris, who clued me in to all your gags, so no funny business! Yes, this is an all-ages show! And since we're not headlining this one, it's your chance to see us a little earlier in the evening than usual.

"Watching Blue Rabbit perform live, your first question is why aren't they already famous? They're unique, they're catchy, and above all, they're wonderfully personal and quirky... On the whole, Blue Rabbit is one of the best bands playing in the [SF] bay area right now in terms of ingenuity, heart, and sound." (Examiner.com)
